Portland Yacht Club

Cruising

Portland Yacht Club began as the Willamette Motor Boat Club in 1908, founded by racing enthusiasts on the banks of the Willamette River. In 1926, the club relocated to the Columbia River and welcomed sailors into the fleet. Organized cruises began as early as the early 1920s, when club members travelled to anchorages on local rivers and downriver on the Columbia River as far as Ilwaco, WA. Our members continue to keep the cruising tradition alive with year-round excursions to our private Outstation, Beacon Rock, Cathlamet, Astoria, and Puget Sound region. Social members are invited to attend all scheduled cruises.

Sail

Portland Yacht Club promotes a wide variety of sailing activities from classes for beginners, to hosting racing regattas, providing organized cruisers on the Columbia River and Pacific Northwest ports, to encouraging blue water extended cruises.

PYC hosts several regattas a year through our sailing committee.  Every Wednesday evening in June the Club hosts the members-only race series called the Mauni Elliott.  Mid-October through mid-March there is a semi-formal series each Sunday, except holidays, called Sailing on Sundays.  Typically, over thirty boats gather to race taking turns to be race committee.  A number of PYC boats participate and the clubhouse is open for all racers following the races.

Let's Go Sailing!

Power

Portland Yacht Club had its beginnings in 1908 as the Willamette Motor Boat Club, and organized cruises began as early as the early 1920s, when club members travelled to anchorages on local rivers and downriver on the Columbia River as far as Ilwaco, WA. Portland Yacht Club remains a popular moorage and social hub for Portland-based motorboaters.

Portland Yacht Club prides itself in being a year-round boating organization. The Cruising Committee curates an annual program with social cruises to our Outstation on Sauvie Island, as well as destinations on the Columbia River and up the west coast. Our Sailing Committee is always looking for powerboats to serve as support boats during winter Sailing on Sunday races. These volunteer boats contribute to the success of our sailing program.

Portland Yacht Club’s marina on the Columbia River is equipped with modern amenities, with a members-only fuel station, pumpout system, and floating scaffolding for easy maintenance. Our local US Coast Guard flotilla provides onsite vessel safety checks, and our Education Committee hosts monthly dock talks with topics and special guests to interest all boaters.

Outstation

Located twelve miles downstream from the club moorage and nestled along the east side of beautiful Sauvie Island, the club’s member-only Willow Bar Outstation is our second home on the river.

Youth Sailing

Who We Are

The goal and concept of PYC Youth Sailing Scholarship is straight forward:  help get kids in boats who might not otherwise have the opportunity.  We do that in two ways.  First, we provide financial assistance, scholarships, to kids taking any organized sailing classes or who are involved in a sailing regatta.  Secondly, we help fund Wind & Oar boat building summer camps which teach kids the art and science of boat building.

What We Do

  • Expand kids’ horizons

  • Give kids a sense of accomplishment and self confidence

  • Promote and teach water safety

  • Teach kids the boating rules of the road (race rules) and fair play

  • Promote learning of winds, water currents and tides

  • Boat building to expose kids to tools, reading plans, math, and working together to accomplish a goal
